Kumihimo (組み紐)
Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese artform and craftwork for making braids and cords. Historically used as decorative accessories for kimono and samurai armor, kumihimo cords are created by interlacing reels of yarn—commonly silk—using specialized looms such as the marudai (round stand) or takadai. Different weaving styles produce cords ranging from flat to nearly rounded. These versatile braided cords serve as obijime, the decorative belts worn around the front of the obi when wearing kimono, and remain a cherished craft for both traditional and contemporary applications.
